Rescue teams searched unsuccessfully for a fifth day for missing hiker Dean Christy, a retired schoolteacher who disappeared Friday after going for a walk in the rain at Green Valley Lake.
Searchers are concentrating on a three-mile radius north and east of Green Valley Lake, which is east of Running Springs, San Bernardino County sheriff's spokeswoman Jodi Miller said.
"Our search and rescue volunteers are still very optimistic," she said.
The search is expected to continue through the weekend, sheriff's officials said Wednesday.
Search and rescue teams have come from as far away as Contra Costa, Ventura and Marin counties and are expected to stay through the weekend, Miller said.
A storm rolled in while Christy, 62, was out walking last Friday. He used his cell phone twice to call for help because he was lost, but he has not been heard from since early Saturday, officials said.
The storm brought snow and chilly temperatures, but sheriff's officials said Christy is an experienced hiker who was wearing a waterproof coat and hiking shoes. He is not believed to have any food or water, however.
The search has included a dog trained to track scents and a helicopter crew using infrared radar that could pick up body heat, Miller said.
